Straight line moving is a type of linear motion in which an object moves in a straight line without changing direction. This is the opposite of rotary or angular motion, which is the motion of an object around a fixed axis. Straight line motion is usually used to describe the movement of an object along a straight path, such as a car traveling along a road or a train travelling on a railway track.
In physics, straight line motion is often considered the simplest form of linear motion because it is characterized by an object traveling in a straight direction over a finite period of time. Straight line motion can be classified into two types, uniform and non-uniform. Uniform linear motion is a straight-line movement in which the distance covered by the object in a unit of time is equal to the total distance it covers. Non-uniform linear motion, on the other hand, is a straight-line movement in which an object covers unequal distances in unit of time. Linear motion can be further broken down into one-dimensional and two-dimensional motion. A straight-line motion is a one-dimensional motion in which the direction of an object changes over time. A stone falling from a set height, an athlete running 200 metres on a straight track and a train travelling on a straight track are all examples of linear motion. Two-dimensional motion, on the other hand, is characterized by a change in the position of an object over time. The motion of a train along a railway track is a good example of two-dimensional motion.
Physicists describe the movements of objects in terms of four main conditions, namely displacement, speed and velocity, and acceleration. They call these the four fundamentals of motion. The study of these four conditions is called Mechanics. It is one of the earliest branches of Physics and is an important subject for Engineering or Architecture aspirants.
